Introduction to Computers


This course takes students with no computer skills whatsoever and takes them through the basics including:

  • The names of computer parts
     
  • Basic mouse and keyboard skills

Course Outline

1 Parts of the Computer

This lesson takes students through different parts of the computer including the keyboard, the screen, the mouse/touchpad, the speakers, the on/off switch, the network plug and the USB jacks.


2 Mouse

This lesson introduces the students to the mouse and simple mouse concepts such as moving the mouse and clicking/double clicking/right clicking and drag and drop.  Microsoft Paint is used as a learning tool.


3 Mouse II + Paint

This lesson plan introduces the Students to the basic concept of what a program is, how to open and close a program, and builds the students' confidence with the mouse by having them creating pictures and coloring in pictures using Microsoft Paint.


4 Mouse III + Paint

The students are given further confidence in the use of the mouse by further use of Microsoft Paint.  Students are shown how to use the Ellipse Tool, the Rectangle Tool, the Bucket Tool and the Line Tool


5 Mouse IV + Solitaire

This lesson plan uses the standard Microsoft game of Solitaire to further build the students confidence with the mouse.   A pack of cards is used to teach the students how to play Solitaire.


6 The Keyboard

Introduces the students to keyboard concepts including special keys (shift, space, ctrl...) and basic typing techniques.  They are taught to use their index fingers for the F and J keys.


7 Keyboard II

This lesson plan further enhances the students' confidence with the keyboard by adding in the K and D keys to their typing skills


8 Keyboard III

Students gain further confidence in the keyboard and begin the process of memorising the basic QWERTY layout


9 Keyboard IV

Students are shown how to write CAPITALS as well as the Enter key for starting a new line.  The Notepad program is used to introduce the concepts.


10 Keyboard V

Students are introduced to the concept of a cursor in relation to text editing.  They are given files with mistakes in them, and they learn to use the cursor to fix the problems.
