Volunteer with HIV postive Women in Uganda
What would you do?
An HIV positive women is so hungry that she can't take her life enhancing HIV medication, She can barely read and she lacks hope.
What you can do?
Volunteer with Meaningful Volunteer in our Literacy programs that are complete with food and life prolonging ARV medication.
How does it work?
Each of our literacy classes has ten or so ladies. Each lady is given a budget to prepare the meal for the day. Before the class begins, all the ladies share the meal. This will:
- Boost their learning potential.
You can't learn on an empty stomach
and
- Allow her to take her ARV medication.
You can't take the ARVs on an empty stomach
They are further empowered empowered through our literacy programs that take them from how to write the letter "A', right through to advanced English concepts such as past-participle verbs ("I have eaten sushi", not "I have eated sushi" or "I have eat sushi".
Empowerment
- Empower ladies with computer skills
We also have a computer lab and a comprehensive computer course that exposes ladies to the 21st century technology. Most - if not all - of our ladies had not even seen yet only used a computer prior to Meaningful Volunteer arriving in their village. Check out our online lesson plans here and meet some of our students in this YouTube video.
- Empower ladies with livelihood programs
Our programs also focus livelihood projects. We are currently working on a fair trade coffee collective project as well as a craft group.
How we'll support you
Detailed Student Information
We believe in providing the best possible information about our students and classes. This provides:
- An excellent way for new volunteers to meet the students they will be teaching
- Provides a way for potential sponsors to get to know some kids
- Provides a motivational tool for students
"Little Johnny can sponsored and he is getting better marks than you. What do you think you should do?"
On-line Lesson Plans and Training
Many other volunteer programs place untrained teachers with zero experience in developing countries with zero resources and expect them to perform miracles. This is the very antithesis of a meaningful experience.
Here at Meaningful Volunteer, we believe in equipping volunteers with as much information and training as we can. We have in depth help available for our English land series of books and here are just a few examples of the type of resources you'll have available to you. Also, you might want to check out one of our on-line lesson plans.
