Project Mangrove

One of the challenges with doing a mangrove replanting project is coordinating all the research and documentation that needs to be done.

This tool - developed by Meaningful Volunteer - allows us to keep all the latest information in one place.

A printable version of this document available here

Introduction
Introduction to the project
Description Status
Advantages of reforestation Done

Produce covering document Done

The Past
If we are to replant mangroves, we must understand the past.
Description Status
Why and how were the mangroves destroyed in the first place? In Progress

What did the original mangrove forest look like? Not Done

How did the community use the mangroves? In Progress

The Present
What is happening now?
Description Status
Who currently owns the land or has use rights to the land? Not Done

Is the area currently productive? Not Done

What are the tidal levels of this region? Not Done

How will we restore this mangrove area? Not Done

Where does the water come from that feeds this mangrove area? Not Done

Who are the local actors interested in restoring the mangrove? In Progress

The Future
How will we protect the mangroves?
Description Status
How will the community look after this mangrove once it is restored? Not Done

What activities will be allowed / disallowed in the mangrove area? Not Done

Who will enforce village regulations? Not Done

Is co-management with the government an option? Not Done

How will you protect the mangroves from outside developers/investors? Not Done

Where are we?
Getting to know the area is an important first steps.
Description Status
Produce a detailed map of the target area In Progress

Past Failures and Successes
Much can be learned from the success and failure of a project
Description Status
What present projects are on the island? In Progress

If so, what were their successes and failures? In Progress

What lessons can be learnt from their efforts? Not Done

Autecology
What are we planting and why?
Description Status
What species are we planting? Why? Not Done

What species are we growing in the nursery? Why? Not Done

What species are on the island? Done

Existing Plantations
What species are present? What are the depth, duration and frequency of tidal inundation? What is the soil salinity? How much fresh water is available?
Description Status
Document existing plantations Not Done

Dispersal
How do the mangroves naturally replenish?
Description Status
Establish distances from established plantations to the rehab areas Not Done

Try to discover any propagules present in the rehab areas Not Done

Hydrology
This should show the topography of the land; mean and extreme tidal levels; and which species are going to be planted where.
Description Status
Produce a diagram detailing the desired hydrology Not Done

Disturbances
Land changes for good and bad reasons
Description Status
Document local disturbances and come up with a plan for removing them Not Done

Determine where the mangroves were before Not Done

Stresses
Once the areas of rehabilitation have been discovered, the stresses need to be identified which prevent rehabilitation
Description Status
Document stresses Not Done

Come up with a plan to remove stresses Not Done

Hydro Rehab Design
The major task of hydro rehab design is to create a natural slope that is suitable for mangrove reforestation.
Description Status
Determine if the topography of target sites have been modified Not Done

If they have, what were they, and how to we change them? Not Done

Determine how the natural flow of water had been modified Not Done

Come up with a Hydro Rehab Plan if necessary Not Done

Natural Reseeding
Once all the stressors etc have been removed, it needs to be established if natural reseeding is occurring.
Description Status
Set up a monitoring system to determine if natural reseeding is occurring Not Done

Determine if replanting is a good thing Not Done

Planting vs. Broadcasting
Which is best?
Description Status
Determine the best method of redistribution Not Done

Plant or broadcast the mangroves Not Done

Monitoring
Record monitoring information on a regular basis
Description Status
Record monitoring information Not Done

Reforestation and Protection
A well planned and executed reforestation plan is all worthless if the mangroves are not well protected.
Description Status
Set up Signs around mangrove plantations Not Done

Start a mangrove education packet for the local schools Not Done
